Other popular classes rotate every several months. If notification is later, only 80% of the tuition payment will be refunded.

CLASSES FOR September 2008

***ALL CLASSES ARE HALF-PRICE FOR STUDENTS AND SENIORS 65 and over***

KIDS KNIT

Once again we offer knitting classes for children ages 6 through 16.  Younger children learn the basic knit stitch and create scarves for a special stuffed animal or doll, then make a bag or tote.  Older children are taught both knit and purl stitches early on, and create a scarf for themselves with many stitch patterns.  Older children work then is guided by their interests. We ask that kids be signed up for a month of classes at a time for continuity and reinforcement of skills.

Time:  Thursday afternoons, starting Sept. 4,  4:00 to 4:45 (younger children may stay for 30 minutes or less, depending on their attention spans)

Fee:  $20 for 4 lessons, plus $15 for a starter kit.  Other materials will need to be purchased as your child progresses.

Dyeing Workshop with the Barefoot Spinner

Knitters, crocheters, spinners and weavers are invited to attend an all day workshop learning to dye yarn or roving with Maureen Pritchard at her studio on her farm in Romney, WV.  Maureen is a professional teacher who brings patient and enthusiastic skills to her students.  For this all-day workshop, students will be provided with different weight yarns (fingering for sock knitters, sport for scarf knitters and weavers, roving for spinners) as well as a myriad of dyes and all equipment necessary and will leave with a product ready to begin knitting or spinning! Maureen is a hostess with the mostess.  She will provide drink and snacks, and asks that you bring a sandwich and salad for your lunch.  She will also show you her sheep, have a sheepdog demonstration, and give you a tour of her studio.  Please note:  we have scheduled this workshop on a SATURDAY as per the request of many who had to miss out on our summer Sunday workshops.  When you register, please inform us whether you will be dyeing roving or which weight yarn.

Time:  Saturday, September 20, 10 am – 4 pm

Fee:  $60

Introduction to Knitting (*at a greatly reduced price!)

This four-week class gives new knitters and former knitters many of the skills to become competent life-long knitters.  While knitting a sampler scarf, you learn the two basic stitches of knitting, how to cast on and bind off, how to read a pattern, and execute 10 different stitch patterns.  There is homework for this class.  The first session is a 2 hour class, while the next three are 1 ½ hour classes.

Time: Saturday morning, Sept 6 (10:30 – 12:30), 13, 20, 27 (10:30 – 12)

            Tuesday afternoon, Sept 9 (1 – 3pm), 16, 23, 30 (1– 2:30)

Fee: $45, all materials for class must be purchased at Millicent’s (at a 20% discount).

Introduction to Lace Knitting

You needn’t quake at the word “lace.”  It consists of knit and purl stitches with some increases and decreases for making holes and for shaping.  Lace can be knit on size 15 needles (yes, it can!) or on size 1.  It can be knit with the thinnest of lace-weight yarns, or it can be knit with worsted weight yarns.  The principles are the same:  with a “knit 2 together,” a “slip slip knit,” a “slip stitch passed over,” and a “yarn over” you can work miracles!  I encourage even newish knitters to try this out.  Knitting lace is accessible and looks very very impressive.

In this class you will learn the basics of lace knitting and then choose a scarf from a set of patterns written just for beginning lace knitters.  You will expand your skills in chart-reading.  If your chosen pattern does not have a chart, you will write one for yourself!

Time:  Tuesday evening, Sept 9, 16, 23 (5:00 – 6:30)

            Saturday afternoon, Sept 13, 20, 27 (2:00 – 3:30)

Fee:  $40 plus 20% off all materials

Knit Your First Sweater

You’ve knitted scarves and bags, maybe even a hat or sock, but you haven’t yet let yourself do a bigger project.  Don’t be scared of fronts and backs, seams and stitches to pick up!  They are straight forward and, when you learn to finish like a professional, you’ll be pleased with your result.

In this class you will be knitting a size 1 or 2 child’s sweater (please, no exceptions).  Think of it as a model upon which you will learn all the skills you need for your adult sized work. You can choose from a number of simply and well-written patterns for a pullover or a cardigan.  By the end of the three weeks you will have knit 4 or 5 pieces (front –or 2 fronts- back, and two sleeves), learned the necessary stitch patterns for your garment, learned to add stitches evenly in the transition between ribbing and the body of the sweater, learned to pick up stitches to apply the collar, learned a three-needle bind-off and the mattress stitch, and finally, learn how to block your sweater.

Time:  Wednesday evening, Sept 10, 16, 24 (5:00 – 7:00)

Fee:  $40 plus 20% off all materials

Crochet Catch-Up

Here’s the class for beginning crocheters.  Or have you crocheted WAY LONG AGO in the past and need a brush-up?  In two sessions you will review basic crochet stitches, how to keep straight sides, even try a granny-square or two.  Learn to do a double-crochet comfortably and you’ll be ready to go into our Filet Crochet Shawl class next month!

Time:  Wednesday evening, Sept 10 and 17 (5:00 – 6:30)

Fee:  $25 plus 20% off materials

Instructor:  Carolyn Groves

Embellished Felted Bags

Felted bags are created by knitting or crocheting a large loose bag and then shrinking it in the washing machine to get a sturdy, thick-walled end-produce.  People continue to discover the excitement of making these bags which can be made in a wide variety of shapes and sized (from eye-glass case size to large totes).  Moreover, the finished felted bag provides a canvas for needle-felted designs, for flower appliqué, or for bead-work.  Students in this class will work on a purse-sized bag in the first two weeks and will be embellishing their felted bag by class three!

Time:  Thursday morning, September 11, 18, 25  (10:30 – 12:00)

Fee:  $35 plus 20% off materials

Instructors:  Judith Robertson and Mel

Knitting Socks from the Toe-Up

There are lots of advantages to knitting socks from the toe-up but the primary one is that you can finish the foot first, so if you run out of yarn, it will shorten only the leg of the sock and not the foot (no more toes knit of funny-colored, non-matching yarns!)

Time:  Friday morning, September 12, 19, 26 (10:30 – 12)

Fee:  $35 plus 20% off materials

Learn to Knit a Toboggan

A simple way to learn to knit in the round and use double pointed needles.

Time:  Sunday afternoon, Sept 14 and 21 (1:00 – 2:30)
Fee:  $20 plus 20% off materials
